As I travel through places and walk through nature, I feel drawn to come closer to study plants around me. I notice the beauty in the intricate designs of leaves and seedpods, their colours, shapes and textures; created with a lot of precision, by force that is much grater that me, but also the same force that lives within my body. If there are fallen or dried out parts of the plant that are in abundance, I collect some to take home with me.
At home I arrange the found objects in an intuitive process. The work becomes a map that represents vegetation of a certain area, as well as my relation to it; reflection on what was happening in my life during that time and how I felt in that environment. This process helps me to reflect on my life and ground myself in a place. Connecting my story with the story of the land.
Below is an example of the first series of this ongoing exploration. These are 4 artworks, sewn seeds on fabric, that with time will decompose and possibly become trees or plants again. The works are abstract maps that tell stories of me in the suburban environment of Adelaide, Kaurna Land.
These works were exhibited at Norwood Townhall for Sustainable Art Exhibition, 2021.
